Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
